William Odell "Bill" Hamilton

June 21, 1929 — April 27, 2019

William Odell "Bill" Hamilton, age 89, life-long Coweta resident went to be with his Lord and Savior on Saturday morning, April 27, 2019 at his home in Coweta, OK. He was born on June 21, 1929 in Stone Bluff, OK and was the son of Roy Hamilton and Flora (Graves) Hamilton-Wofford. Bill served in the National Guard from 1947-1949, working as a mechanic at the armory in Haskell. When the Korean War came about, the military wanted him back in service, and drafted him in 1951 for a two-year tour. As a medic in the Korean War, Bill served with the 8076th Mobile Army Surgical Hospital (MASH), a branch of the 45th MASH based in central Korea. When Bill returned to civilian life back in Coweta, he went to work for Goodyear Rubber and Tire Company as a service manager, shop foreman and mechanic and enjoyed a 23-1/2 year career there, retiring in the mid-1980s. Upon retiring, he got involved with the Wagoner County Chapter of Disabled American Veterans and served as Commander of the Disabled American Veterans Wagoner County Chapter 88 in Coweta for 12 years. He also served as District 2 Commander and as senior vice-commander, junior vice-commander and second junior vice-commander with the DAV State Department. Bill married the love of his life, Delores Jean Perryman on November 30, 1983 in Boone County, AR. Over the course of the years, he was quite active in the Coweta community. In the 1990s, he and his family conducted Coweta's holiday food drive out of his own home, delivering some 400-450 food baskets to local residents every Christmas. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Coweta where he taught Vacation Bible School for more than 10 years and served on Coweta City Council from 1999-2000. Bill was named Coweta Citizen of the Year in 1993. In 2007, he was named a Coweta Distinguished Veteran Graduate and received the high school diploma that eluded him because of his war time service. He enjoyed antique cars, watching wrestling, fishing, hunting, and he loved spending time with his family. Bill is survived by his wife of 35 years, Delores Hamilton of the home in Coweta, OK; three children, Schellie Melton-Dittman and husband Rick of Skiatook, OK, Will Hamilton of Coweta, OK, and Ame Thompson of Wagoner, OK; three grandchildren, Monica Bingley, Lisa Melton, and Sairus Thompson; six great grandchildren, Jessica, Keta, Shelby, Sean, Paris, and Jerry; 1 great-great grandson, Daniel; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends. Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Roy Hamilton and Flora (Graves) Hamilton-Wofford; two sisters, Mary Darling and Norma Jean Blevins; and two brothers, Lawrence Hamilton and Robert Hamilton. Viewing will be from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 30, 2019 at Brown Family Funeral Home. Services celebrating Bill's life will be at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 1, 2019 at First Baptist Church in Coweta, OK with Carolyn Shaw officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow in Vernon Cemetery in Coweta, OK. Pallbearers are Will Hamilton, Anthony Roberts, Dallas Roberts, James Steele, Jason Hughes, and Denver Sasser. Honorary Pallbearers are Rick Dittman, Sairus Thompson, Bryce Roberts, Rhol Perryman, Danny Oliver, and Sean Bingley. Family and friends may share memories online at www.brownfamilycares.com.
