Walter Eugene "Sonny" Vaughn

Walter Eugene "Sonny" Vaughn, age 87, lifelong Coweta resident, passed away peacefully on Monday evening, August 12, 2024, at Gracewood Health & Rehab in Tulsa, OK. He was born on January 24, 1937, in Coweta, OK to Earl Eugene and Josie Wanda (Dice) Vaughn. Sonny's life was marked by his kindness, dedication, and the joy he brought to those around him.

Sonny grew up in Coweta, where he attended Coweta schools. He dedicated many years of service as a custodian at Union Public Schools in Tulsa. His hard work and friendly demeanor left a lasting impression on both colleagues and students.

Outside of work, Sonny was known for his love of the outdoors. He found solace and happiness in tending to his garden, mowing the yard, and taking long walks. His love for nature was only matched by his love for people, especially children, to whom he was the most caring and sweetest presence.

In 1984, Sonny married the love of his life, Ruth J. Vaughn, in Coweta, OK. Their union was filled with mutual respect, affection, and unwavering support until Ruth's passing on October 11, 2011. Their love story remains an inspiration to all who knew them.

Sonny is survived by his siblings, Eunice Jordan, Velma Swarer, Jenice Swarer, and J.W. (Francis) Vaughn; his brother-in-law, Bob Lewis; and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives who were touched by his gentle spirit.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Ruth J. Vaughn; his parents, Earl Eugene and Josie Wanda Vaughn; his brother, Earl "Buck" Cope; and his sisters, Laverne Lewis and Christine Madewell.

Sonny's departure leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, and the simple joys of life. His memory will continue to inspire those who had the privilege of knowing him, and his spirit will forever be a guiding light for his family and friends.

Visitation for Sonny will be held from 6:00 - 8:00 PM on Thursday, August 15, 2024, at Brown Funeral Home in Coweta, OK. Services celebrating his life will take place at 2:00 PM on Friday, August 16, 2024, at Brown Funeral Home Chapel in Coweta, OK, with Rev. Brody Morris officiating. Sonny will be laid to rest at Vernon Cemetery in Coweta, OK, where he will be joined once again with his beloved wife, Ruth.
