Vurnell Morgan

Mikalee Vurnell Morgan was born August 5, 1927 in the Blackjack community of Muldrow, OK to Leonard Mikalee Morgan and Artie Elizabeth (Taylor) Morgan. Vurnell's family moved to Coweta when he was two years old. He attended Coweta schools graduating in 1945. After graduation, he joined the U.S. Navy and was stationed in San Diego, CA. He was a veteran of World War II. After his discharge in 1946, he returned home to Coweta and married his sweetheart Phyllis Howard. The couple raised three children and were married 34 years before Phyllis' death. Vurnell owned several small businesses during his lifetime including a woodworking shop for 21 years. He last worked as a contractor for Wagoner County Rural Water District No. 4. He retired in 1998. Vurnell was an active member of the American Legion Post, the DAV in Coweta and a member of the First Baptist Church in Coweta since 2006. He was a 32nd Degree Mason and a Shriner. He loved driving kids to and from the Shriner Hospital in Shreveport. Vurnell is survived by his wife of 24 years, Saundra Jean Moore of Broken Arrow; his children, Kathy Morgan Duffy and husband John of Tulsa, Michael Morgan and wife Courtney of Stillwater, Tracy Morgan and wife Ellen of Stillwater, and Martha Petty of Grove; his grandchildren, Steven Harlan, Ashley Harlan Scott, Abby Morgan, Matthew Morgan, Travis Morgan, Kevin Duffy, Jesse Petty, Casey Petty, David Petty, Adam Petty, and Cayla Record; nine great granddaughters; three great grandsons; another great grandchild on the way; his daughter-in-law, Debbie Carpenter and husband Jerry of Bixby; and his sisters-in-law, Phyllis Reed of Lincoln, AR and Nell Johnston and husband Cecil of Oologah. He was preceded in death by his parents, Leonard and Artie Morgan; brothers, Harley Morgan and R.C. Morgan; a sister, Iva Morgan Harp; brothers-in-law, Jim Harp and Thurman Reed; sisters-in-law, Ella Dean Morgan and Tres Morgan; and stepson, Jack Petty. Services celebrating Vurnell's life will be at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, August 19, 2019 at First Baptist Church in Coweta, OK with Pastor Bob Green officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in Vernon Cemetery in Coweta. Viewing will be from 1:00 - 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 18, 2019 at Brown Family Funeral Home. Pallbearers are Larry Casillas, Arvil Morgan, Eddie Reynolds, Mitch Kannady, Matthew Morgan, Travis Morgan, Steven Harlan, and Kevin Duffy. Honorary Pallbearers are Ben Swanson, Carl Sisney, Denny Kuebler, Lynn Morgan, Buck Meehan, Rev. David Jones, Ernie Joice, Jack Lyles, Charles Roberts, Rusty Johnson, Vernon Yocham, Rick Downs, Bob Hill, Glen Thornton, Ed Green, Rick Lane, and Bill Giles.
