Velma Lou Hampton, age 91, longtime Coweta resident departed this life on Friday morning, September 20, 2019 at her home in Coweta, OK. Velma was born on February 6, 1928 in Blackgum, OK and was the daughter of Dawson Collins and Ruby (Pack) Collins. She was a devoted homemaker for most of her life. Velma married the love of her life, Lewis Hampton. She enjoyed cooking, raising chickens and calves, shooting guns, and spending time with her grandchildren. Velma was a mother figure to most of her family. She was a hard worker and a very strong person. She was a very good cook and was known for her cakes, broccoli casserole, and many other things. Velma loved children and animals, especially her dogs and cats. She was very family oriented and enjoyed having family get togethers. She was a very special lady and will be greatly missed. Velma is survived by her son, Gary Hampton and wife Rhonda Eden of Washington; her sister, Fern Johnson of Tulsa, OK; her brother, Johnny Wandell of Adair, OK; 4 grandchildren, Stan White, Jayna Nicholson, Jennifer Hampton, and Leann Hampton; 6 great grandchildren, Brittney Nicole Essary, Sarah Rainbolt, Samantha Cox, Amanda White, Deana Mason, and Erica Givens; 14 great-great grandchildren; and her son-in-law, John White; and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. Velma was preceded in death by her husband, Lewis Hampton; her parents, Dawson and Ruby Collins; two children, Barbara White and Leroy Hampton; and her sister, June. A graveside service celebrating Velma's life will be at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, September 24, 2019 at Vernon Cemetery in Coweta, OK with Rev. Brody Morris officiating.
