Stanley Lee Hewitt, known affectionately as Stan, longtime Coweta resident, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 5, 2023, at Prairie House Senior Living in Broken Arrow, OK. Stan was born on March 13, 1938, in Broken Arrow, OK to Oda Lavelle (Foster) and Virgil Leon Hewitt. Stan lived a fulfilling life of 85 years, filled with love, hard work, and adventure.
Stan is survived by his wife of 65 years, Pauline (Greene) Hewitt, and their three children, Tammie Neal (Tony) of Fayetteville, AR, and sons, Terry and Toby Hewitt of Coweta, OK. He was a proud grandfather to five grandchildren, Justin Limon (Jennifer) of Centennial, CO, Lauren Leonhard (Nate) of Wisconsin, Taryn Starkey (Brandon) of Tulsa, OK, Sarah Obiero (Fred) of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, and Spencer Hewitt (Katherine) of Claremore, OK. He also leaves behind seven great-grandchildren, Oliver Massey, Bradie Starkey, Norah Leonhard, Foster Starkey, Liam Hewitt, Lena Starkey, and Jack Limon and numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
Stan was preceded in death by his parents, Oda and Virgil Hewitt, his brother, Fred Hewitt, his grandson, Christopher Hewitt, and his granddaughter, Jaclyn Limon.
Stan attended Coweta High School and shortly after joined the Army. He and Pauline were married on December 21, 1957. After his honorable discharge from the Army, Stan and Pauline returned to Oklahoma and lived in Broken Arrow for the next 11 years. During this time, Stan worked for National Tank and North American Rockwell as a tool maker. He also raised cattle with his brother-in-law, Ed Greene, and had a hay hauling business.
In 1972, Stan and Pauline purchased the Phillips 66 station in Coweta, OK from her brother and sister-in-law, Ed and Thelma Greene. They grew the business and in 1977 sold it and built Stan’s Tire Center at the corner of 121st Street and Highway 51. Despite initial doubts, their hard work paid off and the business thrived for 30 years, serving many generations of happy customers.
Stan was an avid outdoorsman who loved to hunt quail and pheasant. He enjoyed many hunting trips to South Dakota with his buddies. Following his retirement from the tire store, Stan returned to farming, a passion he had been raised with. He loved his John Deere tractor almost as much as he loved Pauline and his kids.
Stan and Pauline loved to travel whether it be by boat, plane, or RV. They were fortunate enough to enjoy trips to Europe, Hawaii, the Bahamas, and many other wonderful places. They were part of a group of “camping buddies” who enjoyed traveling together to Mountain View, Arkansas for their annual Folk Festival, Lake of the Pines, Texas for fishing trips, and all the beautiful lakes in Oklahoma.
Stan was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church in Coweta, OK. His faith was an important part of his life, and he served his church community with dedication.
