Russell Snelson, age 96, longtime resident of Coweta passed from this life on Sunday morning, September 28, 2008 at Coweta Manor Nursing Home. He was born on April 15, 1912 in Coweta, Oklahoma to George Morris and Sarah Lucinda (Ford) Snelson. Russell worked as a truck driver for Long Bell Lumber Company for 30 years. He also did carpentry work. He attended school in the Coweta area until the 3rd grade. He and Opal Mae Dobbs were united in marriage on November 17, 1931 in Coweta, Oklahoma and they later divorced. On March 15, 1974, Russell and Aleta Grider were united in marriage and she later preceded him in death. He was a member of the Free Holiness Church in Hulbert, Oklahoma. Russell was an avid fisherman and he enjoyed hunting and singing. He is survived by three daughters, Velda Withers and her husband, Harry, Donna Cole and her husband, Max, and Glenda Denton and her husband, Larry, all of Coweta; one step-son, Jim Thomas and his wife, Mary Ann, of Enid; two step-daughters, Diane Haney and her husband, Don, of Cherokee Village, Arkansas and Becky Fann and her husband, Ed, of Coweta; four grandchildren, Wade Withers, Ronnie Cole, Randy Cole, and Misty Denton Edwards; ten step-grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; thirteen step-great grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; and other relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, five brothers, six sisters, and one grandson, Bruce W. Withers. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 30, 2008 at the Church of God of Prophecy in Coweta with Rev. Clive Jared officiating. Committal prayers and burial will follow at Vernon Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Wright Funeral Home.
