Roy Vangundy

Roy Leon VanGundy, age 84, resident of Reno, Nevada passed away on Thursday, October 7, 2010 at Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno, Nevada. He was born on March 31, 1926 in McAlester, OK to Elbert Lewis and Annie Catherine (Stevens) VanGundy. Roy attended school in Quinton, Oklahoma. He and Ramona Ligon were married on January 8, 1948 in Van Buren, Arkansas and they later divorced. Roy enlisted in the United States Navy on February 26, 1944 and was honorably discharged on October 18, 1963. He spent 31 years in the United States Navy serving in World War II and Korea. Roy worked as a pharmaceutical wholesaler for the United States Navy. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Roy enjoyed playing slot machines and walking. He will be dearly missed by all those who knew him. Roy is lovingly survived by two sons, Tommy VanGundy and his wife, Anita, of Locust Grove, OK and David VanGundy of Broken Arrow, OK; two daughters, Phylis Christie and her husband, John, of Broken Arrow, OK and Bavette Timbrook and her husband, Steve, of Coweta, OK; 15 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives. Roy was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Bertha Lee, Gladys Marie and Annie Lou, two brothers, Jimmy Lewis and Elbert Dale and one son, Jeff. A graveside service with full military honors for Roy will be at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, October 15, 2010 at Ft. Gibson National Cemetery in Ft. Gibson, OK with Pastor Steve Lee officiating.
