Robert Stanley Clements, Bob, went to be with Jesus early in the morning of June 22, 2023, at his home in Coweta, Oklahoma. Bob was born in Portland, Oregon, his love for the Lord and others impacted many lives during his 70 years.
Born December 13, 1952, to Luther and Nancy Clements, he was the only son of his father, and the third and youngest son of his mother. Because Luther was in the army, they lived in many different places including a few memorable years in Stuttgart, Germany, and spent Bob’s high school years in the San Francisco area.
It was during high school that Bob heard the message of salvation that shaped the rest of his life. The army chaplain shared with him that God loved him and had a purpose for his life, but he was separated from God by sin. But God didn’t want him to be separated from himself and so sent Jesus to pay the penalty for his sin and because of Christ, Bob, and anyone who believes, could be forgiven and be brought into a relationship with God. Bob believed and spent the rest of his life knowing the love of God, learning to love God more, and sharing the love of God with others. After high school, Bob went to the University of Arkansas where he met his forever sweetheart Janie Hugg. They were married on May 25, 1974, and celebrated 49 years of marriage last month.
Bob and Janie spent the first few years of their marriage in Southern California on staff with Campus Crusade for Christ Athletes in Action. Then a brief time on staff at a church in Arkansas before moving with Janie, and the two daughters they now had, to Tulsa, Oklahoma. Here they were blessed with six more children. Raising eight children was one of Bob’s greatest joys.
In Oklahoma Bob discovered he loved teaching and coaching. He taught and coached at Metro Christian Academy, Street School, Mingo Valley Christian School, and Cleveland Middle School. In 2003 the Clements moved to Coweta and Bob taught for Coweta Schools until his retirement in 2019 and coached until 2021. Being a lifelong athlete himself, he loved to see his athletes achieve their goals and was so proud to coach a student to win State in shotput in 2021.
After retirement, Bob loved filling up his schedule helping his children and spending time with his fifteen grandchildren, coaching, teaching, and taking them fishing.
Bob is survived by his beloved wife Janie Clements; his daughter and son-in-law, Megan and Chris Hulson; his daughter and son-in-law, Kendra and Shawn Carnine; his daughter and son-in-law, Hannah and Joel Kelley; his daughter and son-in-law, Abigail and Andrew Broeckelman; his daughter and son-in-law, Molly and Chris Rodriguez; his son and daughter-in-law, Samuel and Taylor Clements; his son and daughter-in-law, Joseph and Taylor Clements; and his daughter Natalie Ann Clements. Bob loved to sing and at an early age taught himself to play the guitar. He enjoyed singing in church and at events and his family will be forever thankful for all the evenings spent singing together while Bob played the guitar. He loved to sing silly songs and folk songs, but most of all songs praising his Savior.
A memorial service celebrating Bob’s life will be at 11:00 AM on Thursday, July 6, 2023 at the Coweta Assembly in Coweta, Oklahoma. The family will be receiving friends before the service from 10:00 – 11:00 AM.
