Pauline Ruth Matthews, age 86, Porter resident, was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma on March 30, 1938, to Paul and Nettie Emanual. She left this world for a better place on July 5, 2024. She had been living near her son in Austin, Texas.

Pauline was raised on a farm south of Muskogee with two older brothers and a sister. She attended a one room schoolhouse that served 1-8 grades. She enjoyed playing with her sister during the two-mile walk.

After graduating from Muskogee Central High School, she went on to Conners Jr. College in Warner. At Conners, she met her future husband, John Matthews. They would graduate, get married, move to Tahlequah, attend Northeastern State College and both became teachers.

She and her husband moved to Porter, Oklahoma in 1960. She taught in the Porter School System for 30 years. Hundreds of students learned to read in Mrs. Matthews’ class. After retiring- she loved to travel!

Pauline was a Christian, worshiping at the Church of Christ in Porter. She taught Bible class and helped with Vacation Bible School.

Pauline was preceded in death by her son, Joe Matthews, her husband, John Matthews, and her brothers, Bill Emanual and Wayne Emanual.

Pauline is survived by her sister, Mary Mangrum of Tulsa, her son, Jay Matthews and wife Beau of Muskogee, her son, Jeffery Matthews and wife Amalie Matthews of Austin, Texas, her granddaughter, Lucy Matthews of Washington, DC, and her granddaughter, Kathryn Matthews of Austin, Texas.

A memorial service celebrating Pauline’s life will be held at 10:00 AM on Saturday, August 3, 2024, at the Porter Church of Christ in Porter, Oklahoma.
