Services celebrating the life of MSgt. Herbert William Smith will be at 10:00 AM on Tuesday, September 18, 2018 at Downtown Bixby Church of Christ, 15802 S. Memorial Drive, Bixby, OK 74008. Matt Huddleston will officiate the service. Burial with full military honors will follow at 2:00 PM at Fort Gibson National Cemetery in Fort Gibson, OK. MSgt. Herbert William Smith, age 89, longtime Haskell resident went to be with his Lord and Savior on Wednesday, September 12, 2018 at Brookdale Senior Living in Broken Arrow, OK. Herb was born on August 11, 1929 in Coalgate, OK to Samuel and Lila May (Bristow) Smith. He was a proud veteran of the United States Air Force. He joined the Air Force in 1947 and retired on May 31, 1968 after 21 years of service. After retiring from the Air Force, Herb received a degree from Preston Road School of Preaching in Dallas, TX and became a Church of Christ Minister. He ministered in Wainright, OK, Stewart, OK and Central Church of Christ in Haskell, OK for over 20 years. Herb married the love of his life, Helen Jean (Hollingshead) Smith on July 3, 1951 in Clark County, NV. He was a member of the Haskell American Legion Post 56 in Haskell, OK. He enjoyed gardening, riding horses and traveling with Ministry and doing in home Bible studies. Herb is survived by his wife of 67 years, Helen Jean Smith; 1 daughter, Judith Hicks and husband, Larry of Marietta, GA; 1 son, Bruce Smith of Harlem, GA; 5 grandchildren, Nicholle Smith, Aaron Smith, Adam Smith, Joel Hicks and Preston Hicks; and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Herb was preceded in death by his parents, Samuel and Lila May Smith, 1 daughter, Patti Jean Smith, 3 brothers, Thomas Smith, Arthur Smith and Henry Smith and 2 sisters, Eller Smith-Blankenship and Alma Smith-Simpson.
