Melvin Cole

Melvin Cole of Wagoner passed away on Tuesday, April 3, 2007 at Wagoner Care Center. He was 77 years old. Melvin was born on June 29, 1929 in Gideon, Oklahoma to Lee and Martha May (Young) Cole. He and Kathron Whittington were married on December 23, 1953 in Wagoner, Oklahoma. They later divorced. He moved to Coweta in 2000 from Chanute, Kansas. Melvin was a farm worker. He worked in a poultry plant in Iola, Kansas. He also worked for the City of Iola Sanitation Department for seven years. His hobbies included fishing, hunting, playing dominos, and he loved spending time with his grandchildren. Survivors include seven sons, Johnny Cole of Muskogee, Troy Cole of Arkansas, Bobby Lee Cole of Wagoner, Jimmy Ray Cole of Muskogee, Melvin Roy Akins of Iola, Kansas, Doug Uitts of Iola, Kansas, and Leslie Summers of Scott, Kansas; four daughters, Peggy May Brown of Wagoner, Susie Bernice Scroggins of Porum, Oklahoma, Lisa Morey of Wagoner, and Tracy Akins of Amarillo, Texas; one sister, Bessie Myrick of Oklahoma City; 29 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, six brothers, three sisters, and one son, Mark Summers. Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 7, 2007 at Wright Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Mickie Burt of Parsons, Kansas officiating. Committal prayers and interment will follow at Moody Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Wright Funeral Home.
