Mary Ellen Rutherford

Mary Ellen Rutherford, of Coweta, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Tuesday, December 28, 2010 at St. Francis Hospital South in Tulsa, OK at the age of 89 years and 20 days. She was a loving and caring mother to her family. Mary Ellen was born on December 8, 1921 in Coweta, OK to Charles and Lucretia Ann (Shirkey) Dunn. She received her education in the Coweta school system and graduated from Coweta High School in 1939. Mary Ellen and Elzie L. "Ed" Rutherford were married on August 1, 1942 in Coweta, OK and he later preceded her in death. She worked as a secretary for the United States Army Corp of Engineers for 25 years until her retirement in 1973. She also worked as a clerk for the United States Postal Service for seven years. Mary Ellen was a member of the Church of God of Prophecy and Coweta Study Club. She also taught Sunday school for 62 years. Mary Ellen enjoyed reading, working crossword puzzles, watching sports, and flowers. Mary Ellen is lovingly survived by her son, Ed Rutherford, Jr. of Allen, OK; her two daughters, Mary Beth Rutherford of Coweta, OK and Crete Kelley of Coweta, OK; and numerous nieces, nephews. Mary Ellen was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and four brothers. Funeral services for Mary Ellen will be at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, December 31, 2010 at the Church of God of Prophecy in Coweta with Pastor James Stone, Jr. officiating and Pastor D. Frank Hughes, Pastor Larry Duncan and Pastor Steven Smith assisting. Burial will follow at Vernon Cemetery. Family and friends may send condolences to Mary Ellen's family online @ www.wrightfh.net.
