Mary Lou Matthews

Mary Lou Matthews, age 85, was born on September 23, 1936 in Buckeye, Arizona to Jake and Velma (Durbin) Meeks.  Mary passed away on Friday, August 19, 2022 at her home in Bald Hill, Oklahoma surrounded by her family.

Mary attended Coweta Public Schools.  On April 10, 1954, she married RB Tyler and they had 5 children.  They were married 27 years.  She later married Johnny L. Matthews on December 22, 1980 and gained 7 more children.  She enjoyed bowling, gardening, cooking, making amazing pies, word puzzles, reading the newspaper, watching OU football, and spending time with her children and grandchildren.

Mary is survived by 4 children, Eva Pool of Coweta, Oklahoma, Kathy Killion and husband Terry of Bald Hill, Oklahoma, Randall Tyler and wife Judy of Coweta, Oklahoma, and Lori Byrd and husband Kent of Coweta, Oklahoma; 1 daughter-in-law, Kim Tyler-Talley and husband Tim of Coweta, Oklahoma; 1 brother, Charles Meeks and wife Barbara of Owasso, Oklahoma; 1 brother-in-law, Stanley Tyler of Eufaula, Oklahoma; 3 step sons, Kevin Matthews of Catoosa, Oklahoma, Michael Noyes and wife Lucinda of Millington, Tennessee, and Johnny Matthews Jr. of Tulsa, Oklahoma; 17 grandchildren; 32 great grandchildren; 2 great-great grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Jake and Velma (Durbin) Meeks, her husband, Johnny L. Matthews, 1 son, Roger Tyler, 1 son-in-law, David Pool, 1 daughter-in-law, Lisa Tyler, 4 brothers, Carl Thomas, JB Meeks, Andrew Meeks, and Donald Meeks, 1 sister, Mildred Hamilton, 3 step sons, Luther Matthews, Robert Matthews, and Justin Matthews, 1 step daughter, Tracy Lawson, and 1 grandson, Stephen Matthews.

Visitation will be from 6:00 – 8:00 PM on Tuesday, August 23, 2022 at Brown Funeral Home in Coweta, Oklahoma.  Services celebrating Mary’s life will be at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, August 24, 2022 at the First Baptist Church in Coweta, Oklahoma with Rev. Paul Holmes officiating.  Mary will be laid to rest at Vernon Cemetery in Coweta, Oklahoma.

Pallbearers are Jason Holmes, Justin Holmes, Dallas Tyler, Kyle Byrd, Josh Pool, and Matt Killion.  Honorary Pallbearers are Drew Holmes, Adam Crofutt, Tyler Proctor, Brandon Holmes, Chase Pulley, and Jace Stacey.
