Marvin H. Fletcher

January 1, 1924 — July 8, 2011

Marvin H. Fletcher, age 86, of Coweta passed away on Friday morning, July 8, 2011 at his home in Coweta, OK, surrounded by his loved ones. He was born on September 18, 1924 in Vian, OK and was the son of Richard and Monnie (Wooten) Fletcher. Marvin's family moved to Webbers Falls early in his childhood and he and his 2 brothers and 2 sisters grew up helping their dad on a small farm. He graduated from Webbers Falls High School and within a couple of months he entered into the Army. After a couple months he was released with an Honorable Discharge for a medical condition. Marvin decided to venture off to northern California settling in a town called Ukiah where he helped farm fruit. He made several trips back to Oklahoma where he met Margaret "Gene" Gay and they got married on January 24, 1948. After marrying Gene, they settled in the small town of Stratford located in the central San Joaquin Valley of California. He got a job as a farm hand working for Wolfson Farms and along came the start of a family. After many years working for Mr. Wolfson and climbing the ladder to Field Superintendant, he was laid off as the owner was retiring. At that point Marvin and Gene decided it was time to return to their roots in Oklahoma. This was in 1963. They settled in Tulsa and Marvin did a variety of jobs to make a living until he got a job with the City of Tulsa in the Engineering Department. Marvin had a crew of men and was assigned to construct new stoplights throughout the City and to provide upkeep to existing lights. In the meantime he moved to Tahlequah and bought acreage; raised a few cows and bought a couple horses. After a few years in the country, the drive back and forth to Tulsa became too brutal, so they moved to Coweta and they have lived in the same house since 1975. Marvin finally retired from the City after 22 years of dedicated service. Marvin has always had a love for baseball/softball when his kids were growing up and he himself played on a men's softball team while in Stratford. Of course, he was the catcher. His other love as a hobby was horses. We can't remember when Marvin and Gene didn't have a horse or two, or three. Marvin and Gene joined the Coweta Roundup Club after moving to Coweta and have been members 36 years. There is a street named after Marvin called, Marvin Fletcher Boulevard and it is located off Pecan Street close to the middle school. It's the drive leading to the Roundup Club. Marvin is survived by his wife of 63 years, Margaret; three children, Barbara McNeely and her husband, Mark, of Porter, OK, Marvin "Wayne" Fletcher and his wife, Beth, of Katy, TX and Shirley Garman and her husband, Steve, of Coweta, OK; an older sister, Goldie Reed of Stockton, CA; 8 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and a host of friends. Marvin was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and one sister. Funeral services for Marvin will be at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, July 11, 2011 at the First Christian Church in Coweta with Pastor Allan Swinson officiating.
