John Winford Denton, affectionately known as JW, passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 21, 2024, at OSU Medical Center in Tulsa, OK. He was born on May 13, 1935, in Coweta, OK to Jack and Pearl Leona (Forbes) Denton.
A proud graduate of Coweta High School in 1953, JW furthered his education at Northeastern State University in Tahlequah, OK. His professional life was marked by a successful career as a project manager for Mashburn Enterprises, and later, he retired from Withco Construction. Additionally, JW was the owner of Denton Painting, where his work ethic and attention to detail were highly regarded.
JW's service to his country was a defining aspect of his life. He was a proud veteran of the United States Army, enlisting on March 26, 1958, and receiving an honorable discharge on August 7, 1962. His patriotism and love for his country were evident in his commitment and service.
Beyond his professional and military accomplishments, JW was a man of many interests. He enjoyed the great outdoors, whether he was hunting, fishing, or golfing. He found joy in the simple pleasures of life, like solving crossword puzzles and spending quality time with his grandchildren. JW's leadership and passion for community were exemplified by his role as president of the Round Up Club.
JW married the love of his life, Phyllis Evelyn Friend, on September 16, 1961, at the First Baptist Church in Coweta. Their enduring love and partnership were the cornerstone of their family, inspiring all who knew them.
JW was a true family man, deeply loved and respected by his relatives and friends. He is survived by his devoted wife of over six decades, Phyllis Denton, of their home in Coweta, OK; his two daughters, Kelly Stockman (Randall) of Coweta, OK and Lisa Denton of Coweta, OK; four grandchildren, Brandon Ullrich (Lacey), Dustin Ullrich (Sarah), Blake Denton (Nellie), and Bailee McDonald; and five great-grandchildren, Kennedy, Mia, Ace, Logan, and Lillian Ullrich. He also leaves behind his sister, Peggy Hogan of Coweta, OK, and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives who will cherish his memory.
JW was preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Pearl Denton, and his brothers, Edward Eugene "PeeWee" Denton and Boyd "Squirt" Denton.
JW's warmth, integrity, and indomitable spirit will be profoundly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His life was a testament to the values of loyalty, hard work, and the importance of family, leaving a lasting impact that will be felt for generations to come.
Visitation for JW will be held from 12:00 - 7:00 PM on Wednesday, April 24, 2024, at Brown Funeral Home in Coweta, OK, with the family present to receive friends from 5:00 - 7:00 PM. A service celebrating JW's life will take place at 10:30 AM on Thursday, April 25, 2024, at the Brown Funeral Home Chapel in Coweta, OK. JW will be laid to rest at Vernon Cemetery in Coweta, OK, with full military honors, a fitting tribute to a man who served his country with honor and pride.
