John Ervin Powell, age 88, of Coweta (formerly of Haskell, OK) passed away on Thursday morning, September 30, 2010 at Coweta Manor Nursing Home. He was born on July 11, 1922 in Peoria, OK to Charles Franklin and Irene Gertrude (Smock) Powell. John was a loving father and grandfather to his family. He attended school in Tulsa, OK. After attending school, John enlisted in the United States Army on October 15, 1942 and was honorably discharged on December 21, 1945. He and Anna May Hoffman were married on December 1, 1952 in Van Buren, AR. John worked as a farmer for most of his life until he retired. He enjoyed peacocks and chickens. John is lovingly survived by four daughters, Audrey Purdue and Robert Graham, of Okay, OK, Jeannie Powell and Kenneth Stockton of Haskell, OK, Cheryl Garrison and husband, Greg, of Coweta, OK, and Susan Fender and husband, Curt, of Sand Springs, OK; seven grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives. John was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, two brothers, Elmer and Alvin Powell, and three sisters, Vinnie Martindale, Bonnie Cole, and Berthie Johnson. A graveside service for John will be at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, October 4, 2010 at Ft. Gibson National Cemetery in Ft. Gibson, OK with Chaplain Lisa Sowers officiating.
