John Jefferson Matthews, of Porter, Oklahoma, was released from his mortal body, Sunday, October 18, 2020 at the age of 83.
John was born February 9, 1937 in Hitchita, Oklahoma to Jay and Lucy Matthews. He attended Victor and Checotah Public Schools. He then continued on to Conners and Northeastern colleges to become a school teacher.
While at Conners, he met the love of his live, Pauline Emanuel and they were married on September 5, 1958. They moved to Porter in 1960, where he became a rancher and taught math and science at Porter High School. He later bought and ran the local feed store.
He was a member of the Porter Church of Christ where he served as a deacon and taught a Bible class for many years.
He enjoyed fishing and talking to friends, but his passion was taking care of his cows. He loved showing them to people. Many have fell to his line “come ride with me, I’ll have you right back”.
John was preceded in death by his son, Joe Anthony. He is survived by his wife, Pauline, of 62 years; his sons, Jay Matthews and wife Beau of Muskogee, Oklahoma and Jeffery Matthews and wife Amalie, and their daughters Lucy and Kathryn of Tyler, Texas; brothers, J.L. Matthews and wife Sharon of Checotah, Oklahoma, Roy Matthews and wife Donna of Checotah, Oklahoma, and Jack Matthews of Porum, Oklahoma; sister-in-law, Mary Mangrum of Tulsa, Oklahoma; and brother-in-law, Wayne Emanuel of Birmingham, Alabama. He will be missed by his extended family and friends.
Graveside service will be held at Greenwood Cemetery in Porter, Oklahoma on Wednesday, October 21, 2020 at 1:00 PM. Viewing will be at Brown Family Funeral Home in Coweta, Oklahoma on Tuesday, October 20, 2020 from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Honorary pallbearers include: Roy Cole, Ben Cole, Matt Cole, Pat Boyd, Chris Boyd, and Nathan Boyd. Very special honorary pallbearers include: Marvin Keefover and James Hogan. In lieu of flowers, the family request donations to the charity of your choice. The family would like to express their gratitude to members of the Porter Church of Christ, staff at Broken Arrow Nursing Home, Good Shepherd Hospice, and Brenda Trotter.
