James Hammett

James Vernon Hammett, resident of Coweta, passed away on Wednesday, January 5, 2011 in Muskogee, OK at the age of 70 years, 3 months and 12 days. He was a loving father, brother, grandfather and great grandfather to his family. James was born on September 24, 1940 in Seminole, OK to Robert Jacob and Beulah (Akins) Hammett. He attended school in Coweta and graduated from Coweta High School in 1958. After graduating, James enlisted in the United States Army on October 29, 1958 and was honorably discharged on October 28, 1960. He and Glenda Ann Stroup were married on July 1, 1961 in Tulsa, OK and they later divorced. James worked as a steel mill worker for Sheffield Steel for 16 years. James is lovingly survived by two daughters, Tina Maria and Chet Richards, of Mannford, OK and Leslie Ann Winans of Sand Springs, OK; one brother, Gerald Hammett of Muskogee, OK; one sister, Carolyn Swartwood of Coweta, OK; eight grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren; 2 nephews; one great niece; 1 great nephew; and other relatives. James was preceded in death by his parents and one daughter, Robin Renee Dolan. Funeral services for James will be at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 8, 2011 at Wright Funeral Home Chapel in Coweta, OK with Pastor Jason Grewe officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow at Vernon Cemetery. Family and friends may send condolences to Mr. Hammett's family online @ www.wrightfh.net.
