Broken Arrow

On October 13, 1937 a beautiful baby girl was born to Joe and Grace (Blue) Johnson in Stonewall, OK and they named her Hellen Lee Johnson.  Hellen went to be with her Lord and Savior on Sunday morning, March 7, 2021.  She received her education at Napier Schools in Ada, OK.  After graduating, she attended East Central University in Ada, OK and finished her Bachelor of Arts degree at Wichita State University in Wichita, KS.  Hellen lived most of her life in Wichita, Kansas. She was a member at Pleasant Hill Church in Leader, OK.  Hellen was an extremely hard worker and cherished her children, siblings, parents, and grandchildren.  She worked as an elementary school teacher and was a director at Phyllis Wheatley Children’s Home in Wichita, KS and also did volunteer work in Wagoner, OK dealing with children.  She had an unconditional love for her grandchildren and great grandchildren that no one could ever take away from her.  Hellen was commonly known for being creative with her quilting, sewing, and making flower arrangements and had a smile and laugh that could light up the room. She loved some good barbeque and fish fries at family gatherings, and she loved going fishing.  She was a strong, smart, caring and giving woman and a great mother, grandmother, great grandmother, great-great grandmother, and sister.

Hellen leaves behind to mourn her passing, her daughter, Mary Swarer and husband Jackie of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma; her grandchildren, LaTasha of Broken Arrow, OK, William of Pawnee, OK, Joseph of Oilton, OK, Jackie Ray of Bixby, OK, Towanna of Houston, TX, Courtney of Houston, TX, Angela of Wichita, KS, Felandice of Wichita, KS, and Michael of Wichita, KS; forty great grandchildren; seven great-great grandchildren; one sister, Gladys of Oceanside, CA; one brother, Terry of Wewoka, OK; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends.

Hellen was preceded in death by her parents, Joe and Grace Johnson; her two sons, Michael and Eugene; two sisters, Bessie and Melissa; her baby brother; her former husband, Gene; and stepmother, Big Momma Sarah.

A Celebration of Hellen’s life will be at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 18, 2021 at True Vine Baptist Church in Ada, OK.  She will be laid to rest at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Leader, OK.
