Freda Faye Cates

Freda Faye Cates, age 85, longtime resident of Coweta, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Saturday morning, Jan. 3, 2015 at Broken Arrow Nursing Home in Broken Arrow, OK. She was born on Feb. 26, 1929 to John F. and Spray (Waters) Barnhart in Okemah, OK. For the first eight grades of school she attended Frentress, which was a small school about two miles from her home. She graduated from Okemah High School in 1947. Freda and Gene Cates were married on May 17, 1947 in the Nazarene Church in Okemah, OK. She was a homemaker and faithful member of the First Baptist Church of Coweta. She enjoyed watching sports and loved reading. Freda was preceded in death by her parents, 1 son, Larry Eugene Cates, 5 sisters, May Smithee, Gladys Barnhart, Vera Belcher, Velma Ogren and Mildred Karsten, 6 brothers, Lloyd Barnhart, Carl Barnhart, Everett Barnhart, Lorin Barnhart, Leonard Barnhart and Bertrand Barnhart. Freda is survived by her husband of 67 years, Gene Cates of the home in Coweta, OK; 1 daughter, Carole Carter and husband, Phil, of Coweta, OK; 1 daughter-in-law, Cecilia Cates of Coweta, OK; 4 grandchildren, Shane Carter, Kimberly Soloman, Christina Hampton and Cassandra Cates; 10 great grandchildren, Courtney, Madeline, Chloe, Anna, Jacob, Sarah, Nolan, Avery, Van and Sonny James; and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Viewing will be from 9 AM - 8 PM on Monday, Jan. 5, 2015 at the funeral home. Funeral services celebrating Freda's life will be at 10 AM on Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2015 at the First Baptist Church in Coweta, OK with Rev. David Jones officiating. Burial will follow in Highland Cemetery in Okemah, OK. Honorary Pallbearers are James Murray, Gordon Burress, Vurnell Morgan, Carl Main, Richard Mason, Bill Hall and Jim Rogers.
