Broken Arrow

Dick Lionas Cast, age 85, resident of Broken Arrow, passed away peacefully at his home in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, on Wednesday, October 30, 2024. He was born on June 15, 1939, in Watseka, Illinois to Thomas and Mary L. (Stone) Cast. Dick's life was marked by his dedication to his family, his passion for education and coaching, and his love for the outdoors.

Dick's journey began in the small town of Watseka, Illinois. He was a proud graduate of Watseka High School, class of 1958. His academic and athletic prowess led him to the University of Illinois, where he not only earned his Master's degree in boy’s physical education and Biology but also left his mark on the football field. Dick's love for sports was not just a personal passion but a gift he shared with countless young people throughout his career.

After completing his education, Dick dedicated his life to teaching and coaching at Broken Arrow South Intermediate, where he taught 9th and 10th-grade students until his retirement in 2003. As a wrestling and football coach, he was a mentor and role model to many, instilling in his students the values of hard work, discipline, and teamwork. His influence extended beyond the classroom and the field, touching the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Dick's love for life was evident in his many interests. He was an avid outdoorsman, finding joy in coyote hunting during the winter months and taking care of his beloved horses. Horse racing was not just a hobby but a passion that he pursued with enthusiasm. His love for animals was also reflected in the care he provided for his dogs, who were a constant source of companionship and joy.

A talented artist, Dick expressed his creativity through wood carvings, a skill that showcased his attention to detail and his appreciation for nature's beauty. His adventurous spirit led him to travel, with the Cayman Islands being a favorite yearly destination where he created lasting memories with his family.

Dick's legacy is carried on by his loving wife, Patricia Cast, of their home in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma; his five children, Steve Alderman (Judy) of Florida, Phyllis Cast of Oregon, Brad Cast of Arizona, Kevin Cast (Danielle) of Florida, and Kelly (Cast) Jones (Chad) of Illinois. He was a proud grandfather to 10 grandchildren—Josh Alderman, Kristin Cast, Kyle Cast, Keithen Cast, Katelyn Blount, Logan Cast, Spencer Martin, Katie Mason, Lainee Sanders, and Tayelor Barnes—and doted on his 12 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brothers, Tom Cast of Kinta, OK, and Joe Cast of Indiana, along with numerous nieces and nephews who will miss his guidance and warmth.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Thomas and Mary Cast, and his brother, Jim Cast.
