David John Voss

David John Voss of Coweta, age 72, a loving husband, father, grandfather and uncle, passed from this earthly world, Tuesday morning, June 26, 2012 at Hillcrest Medical Center in Tulsa, OK. David was born to John and Gladys Voss on July 27, 1939 in Coweta, OK. David was John and Gladys's only child. John and Gladys referred to their only son, as David Lee, until he was enrolled in school and his mother, Gladys had to present his birth certificate. John and Gladys were pleasantly surprised to find our Dr. Riddle had put John down as David's middle name, instead of Lee, because he felt he should be named after his father. So, from then on it was David John. David attended Coweta Public Schools until he graduated in 1957. David loved and excelled in all sports. However, basketball proved to be his favorite and he took his talent to the University of Tulsa on a basketball scholarship. David graduated from Tulsa University with a major in Mathematics and a minor in Physics in 1961. One of David's proudest accomplishments was his induction into Tulsa University Basketball Hall of Fame Class of 2001. David married Carlene D. Evelyn Reynolds, also of Coweta, on September 4, 1959. David and Carlene's marriage was blessed with two children, a son, David John and a daughter, Carla Michelle. David spent the first part of his career working for Rockwell International and was the youngest to be promoted to Manager. David spent 20 years at Rockwell and retired in 1982. However, he wasn't finished working and from there ventured into different trades and that sparked his interest, including owning and starting a bartering business, Voss Tires, Voss Automotive and Mechanics and Voss Monuments. David was still working at the time of his passing as a Bailiff for the Honorable Judge Jeff Sellers. David is survived by his wife of 52 years, Carlene Voss of Coweta; his daughter, Michelle Voss of El Paso, TX; granddaughters, Carlyann Voss Miller of Fort Worth, TX and Brennan Voss Miller of Chickasaw, OK; niece, Sabrina Prewett of Lawrence, KS; and other relatives and friends. David's beloved son, David John Voss II, passed away in 1993. David was an extremely fortunate man to be surrounded by many lifelong friends and family members during his last days on this earth. Funeral services for David are scheduled for 2:30 PM Saturday, June 30, 2012 at the First Baptist Church in Coweta, OK with the Honorable Judge Jefferson D. Sellers officiating. Committal prayers and interment will follow in the Vernon Cemetery in Coweta. Pallbearers will be Corky Mizell, Earl Wakefield, Errol Curlee, Johnie Austin, Tom Russell and Fred Haynie.
