Caren Alice Slick Hurlbut, age 66, resident of Coweta went to be with her Lord and Savior on Friday afternoon, February 2, 2018 at the Haskell Care Center, Haskell, OK. Caren was born on January 5, 1952 in Rome, Oneida County, New York to Harold Milborn Canfield and Agnes Martha (Hurlbut) Canfield. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, Coweta, OK. Her childhood years were spent in Rome and Camden, NY, moving at the age of twelve to Midwest City, OK with her mother and 2 siblings. Caren, along side of her mother, raised and trained quarter horses on a thirty-five acre ranch outside of Harrah, OK. In 1970 she graduated from Midwest City, Oklahoma High School. Caren continued to live with her mother, moving to North Highlands, CA in 1973 and then returning to Oklahoma in 1980 at which time her mother passed away. Her work history included Manager of Wickland Oil Company Station, working at Midwestern Instruments making galvanometers, and dispatcher at the 911 Center, Tulsa, OK. After dispatching Caren made a career change, fulfilling one of her deepest desires, helping children learn. Her deep love of animals and children were evidenced by her choice of vocation, teacher/educator and her volunteer work. Caren was an active and committed volunteer: 25 years docent Tulsa Zoo, Raptor Rescue Squad, Oxley Nature Center, twelve years tutoring at Coweta library for English as a second language group, 3 years of summer reading programs, seventeen years with Coweta Friends of the Library, serving 1 year as president and 2 years as vice president. Caren received an AA degree in Teaching from Oscar Rose College, Midwest City, OK, AA degree in Computer Science from Tulsa Community College, BA in Elementary Education from Northeast State University with teaching certification for pre-K education and all middle school grades in math, history, English, science and social studies, and a MA degree in Reading. Caren is survived by 2 sisters, Jean (Robert) Marshall of Carthage, NY and Betty and husband, Sam Jonas of Williamson, WV, and 2 brothers, John and his wife GuiLian Canfield of Tulsa, OK, and Jim and his wife, Sharon Canfield of Columbus, ND and numerous nieces, nephews and many friends. She was preceded in death by her mother, Agnes Canfield and her father, Harold Canfield and 1 sister, Carol Kent and 1 brother-in-law, Robert Marshall. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, February 19, 2018 at First United Methodist Church, 206 W. Sycamore St., Coweta, OK with Rev. John Miller officiating.
